Worktops for your kitchen

(bathroom, work shop and many other places too...) Worktop or countertop, whatever you call it it takes more punishment than many other parts of your kitchen. It also has to look good for a long time, no matter how many times the children cut their sandwiches without using a chopping board! Whether you are looking to replace your existing worktop or as part of a new kitchen, there are several types and that may be of interest to you.

High Pressure Laminate Worktops

Many people know this as "Formica" which is a Brand Name for a range of Laminate worktops. This is by far the most common type of worktop in the UK and comes in a range of standard colours and texturees, including Granite look-a-likes.

The worktop is made by creating a sandwich of chipboard core (which gives strength, thickness and stability to the worktop), a decorative paper (which is the pattern and colour of the finished worktop) and finally a plastic, scratch resistant layer (which is the surface and also gives texturee to the worktop).

Granite Worktops

Another popular choice for the traditional look is Granite. Available in a range of colours chosen by mother nature, as a work surface Granite will last for years. Granite is also very hard to scratch. Granite is a very hard material so can only be cut and profiled to fit your kitchen with large machinery. A template is taken of your kitchen and the worktops are fabricated away from your home. Once ready, we bring them to your house and fit them in your room. We only supply granite worktops when we are supplying and fitting the kitchen (please also note we only fit granite worktops in Kent)

Quartz Worktops

Quartz worktops are often described as an "engineered stone" or "man-made granite". The raw material (quartz) is mixed with resins and colour pigments to produce a sheet of material that can be fabricated into worktop just like natural granite. As a manufactured product it has several advantages over granite including; better colour consistency between slabs, known technical properties, no cracks/fissures to work around. There are also several disadvantages including; it doesn't look like granite, it often costs a little more than granite due to the manufacturing process (the actual price difference will depend on colours chosen), only one manufacturer will make a specific type of quartz, whereas several quarries may be mining granite. Quartz shares many good properties with granite worktops including being very resistant to scratching. A rule of thumb price is οΎ£400 per metre of worktop length, although the exact price will vary depending upon your exact requirements.

Corian Worktops

Corian is a man made worktop material. Its biggest selling point being that it is very hygienic and can be formed into any shape. It is very easy to clean and although it can be scratched, these scratches are easily cleaned out by mild abrasive cleaners such as 'Bar Keepers Friend'.
